SCOTT DOUGLAS WINS TORC SEASON OPENER AT RED BUD MX
Buchanan,
Michigan—Scott Douglas launched into the 2011 Traxxas TORC
Series presented by AMSOIL season the same way he closed out the
2010 season—with a decisive win at the Red Bud MX season opener
on Memorial Day weekend.
The
win came after torrential rains forced the race to be canceled
on Saturday because the track was too sloppy to allow emergency
equipment access to sections of the hilly natural terrain
circuit. Racers and TORC Series officials were determined to get
at least one round of Pro racing in for the hardcore Red Bud MX
fans.
With another major thunderstorm on the radar, the Red Bud track
crew worked feverishly to groom the track for racing on Sunday.
TORC adjusted the schedule and put the Pro 4 trucks out on the
track first since four-wheel-drive was going to be an advantage
in the super muddy conditions. Without practice or qualifying
time on the new racetrack, veteran drivers like Douglas had an
advantage with their ability to read the terrain and surface
conditions.
The number 7 AMSOIL F-150 started on the outside of row two.
When racing went green, Douglas wisely stayed clear of the open
lap mayhem. Johnny Greaves pushed hard for the lead,
but
was too aggressive over the big step-up jump and over shot the
corner to end up high-centered in the thick mud on the outside
of the turn. Douglas chased down Mark Jenkins, but once another
truck fell victim to the slick conditions race officials threw
the red flag so they could clear the track.
Shortly after the restart, Scott Douglas made a pass for the
lead and never looked back. Douglas is a master in the mud,
where it’s all about car control. He was able to run the AMSOIL
BFGoodrich F-150 right on the ragged edge and stay out front all
the way to the checkered flag. Ricky Johnson closed on Douglas a
few times, but in the final laps Scott was able to open up a
comfortable lead. In the process, Scott Douglas won the Oakley
Bomb Run Award for the fastest lap of the race.
The
muddy conditions wreak havoc on the trucks blocking even well
protected radiators, adding weight, and putting additional load
on the powertrain. “Our coolant temperature gauge was pegged
after the restart, but my faith in the AMSOIL Synthetic Racing
Oil allowed me to push the truck hard all the way to the finish.
We run AMSOIL Dominator Coolant Booster, so I knew we were
getting maximum heat transfer and there was no worry of boiling
over,” stated Douglas from the top of the winner’s circle
podium. Surveying the second and third place finishers next to
him Douglas continued…”In fact, it’s no coincidence that all
three of us on the podium are running AMSOIL in our trucks. With
these severe conditions, I wouldn’t trust my race truck with
anything else.”
Scott Douglas leads Pro 4 points with the victory at Red Bud.
TORC Series racing resumes June 18th and 19th at Crandon
International Raceway in Crandon, Wisconsin.
